The new EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini (replacing Catherine Ashton) said today:
“What we need is not just recognition [of a Palestinian state]. We need the building of a Palestinian state that can live next to the Israeli one in peace and security.”
While Friend Robert pointed out to me:
It might be worth double-checking with the Guinness Book of World Records, but I’m pretty sure that “a Palestinian state that can live next to the Israeli one in peace and security” is the longest oxymoron ever concocted.
In actuality the EU envoy simply got her quote wrong. What she meant to say was:
“What we need is recognition that a Palestinian state will never live next to the Israeli one in peace and security.”
