Veteran congressman Jerrold Nadler is up for reelection this November but before that he will be running in a primary election on June 28 for the Democratic Party nomination.
In light of his performance during the Iran nuclear deal debacle, we are reluctant to endorse him even though we have regularly done so in the past. Nevertheless, given his longstanding support for positions we’ve taken on a variety of other issues, we offer him our endorsement, albeit with a good deal of hesitation, for the June 28 primary.
What particularly rankles is that Mr. Nadler’s statement accompanying his declaration of support for the Iran deal actually made a better case for opposing it. And indeed, the Obama administration’s spin on the deal is now wholly suspect given the fantastic revelations of its principal designer, an aide to the president who doubles as a professional writer of fiction.
On the practical level, there are the overarching issues of holding Iran’s feet to the fire concerning inspections and limiting its ability to continue its major funding of terrorism around the world and its missile-testing program through the imposition of new sanctions.
We hope Mr. Nadler will use his seniority wisely on these issues and vindicate our decision to support him on June 28.
