We join Klal Yisrael in mourning the passing of Rabbi Nisson Wolpin, longtime editor of The Jewish Observer magazine, published by Agudath Israel of America from 1963 until it ceased publication 46 years later.
Rabbi Wolpin was an accomplished Talmudist and successful yeshiva educator but was best known for his work at the magazine, which provided a forum for the discussion of timely topics from what would now be referred to as a haredi perspective. (Dos Yiddishe Vort continues as a Yiddish-language periodical published by Agudath Israel.)
Rabbi Wolpin was a gifted editor, which, combined with his thorough grounding in Torah sources and regular contact with the Torah personalities associated with Agudah, made it possible for The Jewish Observer in magazine format to provide literate, authoritative Torah-based commentary on current issues to Jewish readers not necessarily conversant in Hebrew or Yiddish. His stewardship and interaction with contributing writers made The Jewish Observer an important source of Orthodox opinion.
May his memory be a blessing.
