A central concern for The Jewish Press is how the next president will relate to Israel. Unfortunately, there has been a dearth of focus on this issue. President Obama has made it clear he continues to believe Israeli settlement building should be severely restricted and existing settlements rolled back. Mr. Trump proclaims he will be the best friend Israel ever had in the White House. Mrs. Clinton says she would never impose a settlement on either Israel or the Palestinians (although she forcefully trumpeted the administration’s anti-settlement line for most of her tenure as Mr. Obama’s secretary of state).
Another overarching issue, of course, is what the 2016 election will mean to the future direction of the United States Supreme Court. The next president will almost certainly make several picks to the high court. Yet this too has not been widely explored. Mrs. Clinton will likely select jurists who lean in favor of expanded gay rights, same sex marriage, non-gender specific bathrooms, and unrestricted contraception, often at the expense of religious institutions. There would also be support for further extensions of Obamacare and greater governmental regulation of business and industry.
The bottom line? There is no substitute for readers making every effort to inform themselves on the issues and decide which of the candidates is more aligned with their thinking.
