Presumably, President Trump’s latest announced plan for freeing the hostages and ending the war in Gaza will be fleshed out in the next few days. Disappointingly, it apparently provides a pathway to Palestinian statehood. But it is already clear that the sine qua non has once again been ignored. That is any deal that is entered into by the Palestinians is ultimately unenforceable. And this holds true in terms of the Trump plan and the growing international recognition of Palestinian statehood as well.

Thus, to the extent that the so-called “moderate” Palestinian Authority can be trusted – not an easy notion to accept – it is the implacable Hamas enemy that will soon resume being in charge of compliance, whatever it is that will be required of the Palestinians and there is no doubt about their untrustworthiness.

So Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke to both development issues when he nailed it in his speech the other day to the UN General Assembly, insisting that “You will not shove a Palestinian state down our throats. We will not commit national suicide because you are weak.”

Hopefully President Trump will take due notice and be advised accordingly.
