V-E Day’s Bittersweet Redemption

The Mittwochs had fled Hitler and were co-founders of Kibbutz Lavi in the Lower Galilee. In an interview, Michael Mittwoch said, “This is our answer to Hitler, damn him. He tried to wipe us out, and here we have brought the 100th great-grandchild into the Covenant of Abraham.”

One hundred great-grandchildren in Israel! I can think of no more tangible manifestation of Jewish redemption in our time than that.

On this, the 70th anniversary of V-E Day, Am Yisrael should honor all the Allied soldiers whose blood and sacrifice brought about the defeat of the Nazis.

And of course we must thank Hashem for fulfilling His promise and bringing us forth “with a mighty Hand and an outstretched Arm.”
