We disagreed with his position that he is only the CEO of the United Nations and we pointed out that as head of the organization he had a responsibility to reign in the anti-Israel Human Rights Council and to demand fairness and balance rather than a lynching disguised as an impartial investigation.
Unfortunately, the secretary-general held firm to his position that 75 percent of Palestinian casualties in Gaza were civilians and that Israel’s actions in Gaza constituted a “disproportionate” response.
Despite our disappointments, Jewish leaders will continue to press officials in Washington and elsewhere to defend the justice of Israel’s struggle; to demand that terrorists like Hamas and their sponsors be held accountable for their war crimes and crimes against humanity; and to insist that European democracies fully defend the rights of their Jewish citizens.
It will be a long, uphill battle – one that will demand the kind of solidarity Jewish leaders brought to our meeting with Ban ki-Moon.
