If a person wouldn’t comprehend the word determination they would take out their (handy dandy) Merriam Webster’s pocket dictionary and scroll through the detailed pages until they find the letters “D-e-t-e-r-m-i-n-a-t-i-o-n”: “firm intention, firmness of purpose.” They would nod with satisfaction and head on with their life. However, determination is on a whole different level. Determination is the feeling that descends into a person’s heart when they feel the urge to accomplish something. For example, a father crosses a start line to a 4-mile race, sprinting with all his power/might to finish the exhausting race. Because he knows that his precious little gem (a.k.a his daughter) is waiting for him at the finish line. He understands that all the huffing and puffing at the end will be worth seeing the reaction on his daughter’s face. He will see that she is running to her father’s arms being proud that the man who finished the “never ending” race is her FATHER! Determination is defeating the impossible- the stuff that people never thought a person can accomplish,” an anonymous person states. The little train who thought he can never ride himself and another long train to the other side of a huge monstrous looking mountain. He knew he was so small so little how could he possibly do it!? But once he started believing in himself, chanting the (now very famous) phrase, “I think I can, I think I can,” the impossible happened and he could! Determination is not just giving up on the first or second attempt. But rather, trying a new tactic to accomplish a person’s goal, or steps leading to a goal. The person should figure out what was wrong with what he did on their last attempt, and try again. “If at first you don’t succeed try try again!” A very expressive model for this quote is a toddler attempting to walk. The baby steps to walking: 1. The baby starts crawling. 2. The baby stands up while clutching to a” foundation”. 3. The baby learns how to stand. 4. The baby lifts its legs while standing. But as a reaction, the baby falls to the floor (while doing this the baby is either laughing or crying). 5. The baby starts Walking at small paces. 6. The baby learns how to walk!
Determination is sometimes applied for evil (synonym: REVENGE). A person plots their whole life on how to give revenge to a person that they waste their valuable time on earth by not doing well, and in effect, they just try to attack their “enemy”. But the truth is at the end revenge will never put the “last missing puzzle piece to the puzzle,” they will just go back to where they started, just despised. Instead of ruining their suspect’s life they just ruin their own!
Determination can sometimes feel like the person is trying too much, that they will never get there-to their goal! But remember, “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”
— Harriet Beecher Stowe
Determination is,,, EVERYTHING!
