We have been down this road before. And many lives have been lost over it. The philosopher Santayana once defined a zealot as “One who, upon losing sight of his objective, redoubles his efforts.” In their zealousness to find a “partner for peace,” many of the world’s leaders are once again willfully covering their eyes and playing dumb.

I really wonder if we in the West are educable.

My prayer for the coming year is that our leaders find the wisdom that is necessary for self-preservation.
