We should look to the U.S., as well, where Arabs and Muslims have taken their place in society. Of course there’s unrest, of course there are anti-social phenomena, just as there are such unfortunate cases in the African America and Latino minorities. But the system in America, as I have been watching it from afar, appears to be respectful of Muslims while at the same time exceptionally harsh to those of them who conspire against society.
Likewise, in the dialogue between us, Muslims, Jews and Christians, we must give one another the benefit off the doubt and assume that the person on the other side has the best and highest intentions – but then we must also apply our judgment and our standards to demand that the other side make the effort to communicate with us in a civilized fashion. Those two components: trust and acceptance combined with caution and realistic observation, have guided human beings over the centuries through some harrowing events. And each time we let go of one of them – we met disaster.
