Last Shabbat, on the 10th of Shevat, we commemorated the yahrzeit of my beloved grandfather, Rabbi Shalom Klass, z”l. Though he lived in America and I only got to see him during the summers when my family visited, his influence on my life has been profound and everlasting. He was a man of Torah, wisdom, loved the land of Israel and had boundless love for me. A figure whose presence shaped not only my childhood but also who I am today.
What stood out most about my grandfather was his deep love for Torah. He was always immersed in study, sharing stories and lessons with those around him. Yet, alongside his devotion to Torah, he was also a successful businessman who provided for not only his own family but also supported countless others. My son, Moshe, who lives in America, has become a very successful businessman. He has said many times that his role model was Zaidy Shalom, my son said he wanted to be a great success in business so that he could help his family and others, just like my grandfather did. My son Moshe is truly a chip off the old block.
Zaidy Shalom’s kindness and generosity were legendary, touching the lives of many. His business ventures were never just about personal success; they were a means to help and uplift those around him.
Despite the limited time I spent with him, my grandfather’s warm and loving personality left a permanent mark on me. His kindness, humility, and wisdom are values I carry with me every day. Even during difficult times, the thought of his strength and character has given me the courage to keep going.
One sweet memory I have of him is how he used to call me “Sunshine.” It all started when I bought him a small gift – a dancing, singing sunflower. Every time I entered the room, he would smile and say, “Here comes my flower.” That nickname, “Sunshine,” became a special bond between us, representing the warmth and joy we shared.
Even though he lived far away, he always made me feel unconditionally loved. I knew that no matter what I asked for, my grandfather would always do his best to give it to me. That sense of security and unwavering support gave me tremendous strength as a child and continues to inspire me as an adult.
One of my children are named after my grandfather – Nechemia Shalom. Every time I say his name, I think about my grandfather and the beautiful meaning behind the word shalom, which symbolizes peace. My grandfather truly embodied peace – not just as a name but as a way of life. He was a man who brought harmony and love wherever he went.
Watching my son Nechemia Shalom grow, I see glimpses of my grandfather in him – the love of Torah, the kindness toward others, and a joy for life. It fills my heart with hope and pride, knowing that my grandfather’s legacy lives on. I can only pray that my children experience the same love and strength from their grandfather as I did from mine. That bond, that source of unconditional love, is a gift that shapes a person forever.
Every child deserves a figure like my grandfather – someone who embodies love, wisdom, and unwavering support. He taught me not just through his words but through his actions, showing me what it means to be a good person, a proud Jew, and a person of integrity and compassion.
As the years go by, I find myself thinking about him often. I miss his hugs, his songs at the Shabbat table, and the warmth of his presence. If I could see him again, I would cherish every moment, just as I did when I was a child.
Zaidy, I love you deeply and think of you always. Your memory continues to guide me, and your love remains a source of strength in my life. You taught me to face life’s challenges with courage and kindness, and I am forever grateful for that.
To this day, when I face difficult moments, I think of you and find the strength to continue. Your legacy lives on in me, in my family, and in the stories I share with my children. I hope that they will carry your wisdom and love with them, just as I do.
Thank you, Zaidy Shalom, for being my sunshine and my guide. I love you forever.
