“So why did you say our uncle must give me the full ten grand?” asked Dan.

“If the recipient is poor, then the promise of a gift is considered a commitment to tzedakah,” replied Rabbi Dayan. “This is already a pledge, which has a separate requirement to uphold, derived from the verse, b’ficha [R.H. 6a]. As such, a person who committed even a large gift to a poor person or tzedakah organization may not retract.” (Y.D. 259:12; C.M. 125:5)
