Now we can see why one who keeps this mitzvah will merit seeing the ultimate revelation of Hashem’s glory in this world. Since we show Hashem that we have a great desire to reveal His presence in our miniature Bais HaMikdash through our Shabbos candles, we will be zoche to see the complete revelation when Moshiach comes.
Man and Woman
However, we can explain this on a deeper level. The Shelah (masechtas Shabbos, perek ner mitzvah) writes that one of the reasons we light two candles is that the male has 248 limbs and the female 252 (as delineated in Bechoros 45a) which equals 500. The gematria of two times “ner” is 500. This can be explained on two levels. Simply speaking, the neiros Shabbos represent the unification of the husband and wife, which occurs on a deeper level on Shabbos. But, we can suggest that it is also a reference to the unity of Hashem and Klal Yisroel. In Shir HaShirim we find that our relationship with Hashem is symbolized through the closeness of a husband and wife. Therefore, lighting these two neiros symbolizes the great closeness between us and our beloved Hashem, which occurs on Shabbos. Thus, a person who fulfills this mitzvah and actually brings the Shechinah into his home on a small level will merit seeing it in its fullness when Moshiach comes.
Now we understand why this is such a special moment. When we light the neiros we are actually inviting the Shechinah into our homes. Even if we are not able to feel the extra kedushah, our neshamos do, and perhaps that is why our hearts open wide and it is easier for the emotions to pour out. This is a perfect time to daven, as Hashem is now close by. And perhaps this is why the nonreligious also appreciate this mitzvah. Even though their souls are deeply buried under layers and layers of separation, at this time of the week their longing for Hashem bursts out, causing them to want to partake in this mitzvah!
This knowledge will hopefully change the way we perform this mitzvah. When we set up the neiros and light them, we will do so with the thoughts that we are ushering the presence of Hashem into our homes! We will certainly make sure to be respectfully dressed in our Shabbos garments and to light calmly and joyfully. At some point on Friday night, we will try to take a moment to contemplate the flickering flames and what they represent. And, of course, we will make sure to pour out our hearts in prayer to Hashem after we light, and ask Him for all our needs, especially to merit very soon to the neiros of Tziyon!
