As each man entered Reb Levi Yitzchak’s study, he asked him, “What do you think about when you are blowing the shofar?”
Each person gave an explanation demonstrating his greatness, piety, and knowledge of the shofar. “I think of the Holy name of G-d,” one said, while another said that he concentrated on the sounds and the words of the prayer. Reb Levi Yitzchak was not satisfied until one day a man came in to apply and answered, “Rebbe, I am a poor and common person. I have four daughters that are now of marriageable age and I do not have the funds to make their weddings. Therefore, when I blow the shofar, I daven to Hashem and say, ‘Ribbono Shel Olam, I am now fulfilling your mitzvah of blowing the shofar. Therefore, now fulfill Your part and enable me to marry off my daughters.’”
Reb Levi Yitzchak clapped his hands in joy and said, “You are the proper man to blow the shofar, for you are the only honest man that has come to me and your thoughts are proper.”
