Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat puts cement on the official cornerstone celebrating the reopening of the Tiferet Israel Synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat helped lay the cornerstone for the reconstruction of the Tiferet Yisrael synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, on Tuesday.

The synagogue was built in the early 1800’s, and was one of the most beautiful of Jerusalem’s buildings at the time.

In 1948, the Jordanians destroyed many of Jerusalem’s Jewish synagogues,  including Tiferet Yisrael, when they illegally occupied Jerusalem.

The Israeli government has pledged NIS 50 million to rebuild the shul.

Some people say we should demand restitution from the Jordanians to cover the cost of reconstruction.

But ask yourself, do we really want them to have a role in this great Mitzva?
