The Jerusalem Lions is the only women Rugby team in Jerusalem, and in 2009 it placed third in the Rugby league in Israel. In 2010 I’m not sure they competed.
Their only competitors are the Tel Aviv and Haifa teams.
The team is made up of amateurs in their 30s who leave their work and children once a week to train, rain or shine.
The year 2013 has been big for Israeli women’s rugby. In May, the women’s national seven-a-side team finished third in the Division B European Nations Cup held in Bratislava, Slovakia. Then Israel hosted the Division A European Rugby Sevens Championships, in my home town of Netanya.
Back in 2011, an appropriations committee in the Jerusalem municipality decided not to fund the women’s rugby team after religious city council members discovered the team plays on Shabbat.
I think there are worse things they could do on Shabbat than play ladies’ rugby.
