The Israeli Air Force has decided to name its new fighter training jet the “Lavi”.
The jet is being manufactured by Aermacchi of Italy. Israel is buying 30 of these plane.
In exchange, Italy is buying Israeli military systems including satellites and control systems.
Until now Israel has been using aging US Skyhawk jets for training, and these new jets will better prepare pilots on a more modern platform.
The original Lavi was designed as a “Made in Israel” superior fighter jet, but the project was killed years ago following disagreements with the United States. Now Israel is buying the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which is not its first choice.
Regardig the Lavi, obviously someone wanted to keep the name alive.
