It’s Jerusalem, July 1948. The city is under Arab siege. To get water you go downstairs to the water truck and get your portion. It’s the summer of 1948, only a few months after the declaration of independence and the establishment of the Jewish State, and things don’t look great up here.
The photograph was shot by Yehuda Eisenstark (1912 – 2005), whose images of Jerusalem under siege can be found here, in the State Archive.

Does anyone know what street this is? Is the barber shop still there? It’s Jerusalem, remember, things stay the same here for a long time.
