The Knesset on Monday night passed a bill submitted by MK Oren Hazan (Likud) to amend the State Flag, Emblem and Anthem Law, 5709-1949 to bear the full name “Israel” and be titled from now on, the State of Israel Flag, Emblem and Anthem Law, 5709-1949.
MK Hazan spoke from the podium after the vote in the Knesset, saying, “For the first time in 67 years, the Knesset has determined clearly the name of the state — it is the State of Israel. To anyone who may have forgotten, the national assembly declared the name Israel … In the Land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people…” (the last line opens Israel’s Declaration of Independence).
“This is the first legislation that isn’t ashamed to say that this is the Land of Israel — and the Torah of Israel will continue to be with us. We have passed—possibly in miniature version—a kind of national law. To conclude, I’d like to say, Here in the Land of Israel a Jewish State — in the Land of Israel, not Ishmael.”
After Hazan came down from the podium he yelled at the Arab MKs: “It’s over, that’s it, it’s ours.”
