Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday condemned the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, saying it damaged Iran’s interests.
Iranian protesters rushed the Saudi embassy in Tehran on Jan. 2 in response to Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shi’ite scholar Sheikh Nimr. The Saudis then cut off relations with Iran, which cut all commercial ties with Riyadh in return, and banned Shiite Iranian pilgrims from embarking on the journey to Mecca.
“Attacking the Saudi embassy … was really bad and harmed Iran and Islam,” Khamenei was quoted as saying on his website. He also thanked the Revolutionary Guards for detaining a group of US sailors in the Gulf last week, praising them for doing the right thing.
