Kaufhaus des Westens, a.k.a. KaDeWe (German: Department Store of the West) in Berlin, the largest department store in Europe, announed on Sunday that it’s putting Israeli wines back on the shelves after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused it of boycotting Israeli goods.
KaDeWe said on its Facebook page that eight Israeli wines had been temporarily removed, for the purpose of labeling them, in keeping with the new European Union regulations requiring products made in Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria to be identified. The store apologized and assured its customers that “as of today the eight Israeli wines will be back in our assortment” and that “in this matter, which was about a European Union recommendation, we acted too quickly and insensitively.”
Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu said KaDeWe was enforcing “a boycott in every respect,” and called on the German government, which opposes product labeling, to get involved.
Netanyahu also noted that KaDeWe used to be owned by Jews before the Nazis forced them to sell it.
