Ahmed Sharbaji (23) from Umm El-Fahm is yet another Israeli-Arab that realized there’s nothing particularly romantic about fighting for ISIS in Syria.
Sharbaji left for Turkey in January of this year, and then snuck into Syria, joining ISIS with his friend Ahmed Habashi.
Habashi was killed in fighting in Iraq.
After joining ISIS, Sharbaji underwent military training, and was given guard duty tasks in Syria and also fought in two gun battles.
Sharbaji also handed over his Israeli passport to ISIS.
After regretting his actions, In April, he contacted Israeli security officials and asked to come back to Israel. He snuck out of Syria via Turkey, and upon his return to Israel he was arrested.
A Haifa district court sentenced Sharbaji to 22 months in jail.
