Australian Jewish leaders have called for official investigations of the suicide death of “Prisoner X“ Ben Zygier, the alleged Mossad spy who hanged himself in an Israeli prison cell two years ago.
“We look forward to the official inquiries publishing concrete information about the circumstances surrounding the death of Ben Zygier in the hope that it will put further rumor and speculation to rest and bring some comfort to his still-grieving family and friends,” said Danny Lamm, president of Executive Council of Australian Jewry.
It was the first time the Council has spoken out on the incident since last week’s sensational exposé by Australian media that Zygier committed suicide after his imprisonment of what is assumed to be treason or another crime that harmed the country.
The Israeli government has announced it is carrying out two probes, one by the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee and the other by the office of the attorney general.
