At least six police were killed and three injured early Friday in a bomb attack in the Giza Haram district, near the Sphinx and the pyramids, Egypt’s Ministry of Interior announced. The victims included two officers, a low-ranking policeman and two conscripts. The three injured policemen were evacuated to hospital.
According to Ahram Online, the explosive device was hidden in a garbage can at a security checkpoint near Al-Salam mosque in the Haram Street.
Egyptian authorities are investigating, so far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Attacks against security forces have been common since the fall of the Muslim Brothers regime in 2012, but usually take place on the east bank of the Suez Canal, in the northern Sinai, where an Islamist insurgency dominates much of the area. Egyptian security forces killed three terrorists on Tuesday during a raid on the Muslim Brotherhood in southern Egypt.
