Dr. Henry Judah Heimlich (1920-2016), the Jewish doctor who first described the Heimlich maneuver in 1974, which is commonly used to save choking victims, died on Friday night at age 96, following a massive heart attack a few days earlier.

Heimlich said he used the move twice in his lifetime to save 2 choking victims, the first time, reportedly around 16 years ago, the second time, in 2016.

Heimlich also invented the Heimlich chest drain valve which allows air and blood to drain from the chest, allowing a collapsed lung to re-expand.
