Egyptian authorities have announced that 19 Americans will be put on trial over their work for pro-democracy non-governmental organizations in Egypt.
Sam LaHood, the son of current US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and director of the International Republican Institute in Egypt is among those expected to be tried on accusations of illegally using foreign funds to incite civil strife.
The Obama administration has expressed serious concern about these developments and has threatened the drastic measure of cutting billions of dollars in American aid.
“We will have to closely review these matters as it comes time for us to certify whether or not any of these funds from our government can be made available under these circumstances,” said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
