The Egyptian Army announced Wednesday they destroyed six Hamas smuggling tunnels that led from Gaza into the Sinai Peninsula.
The tunnels were destroyed in the final week of February and the first week of March, according to the statement.
Egypt established a buffer zone in 2014 along its border with Gaza as part of its strategy to prevent the region’s ruling Hamas terrorist organization from collaborating with the Islamic State terrorists who were flooding into northern Sinai.
The “Sinai Province” terrorist organization, a branch of the international Islamic State (ISIS / Da’esh) terror group, has been attacking Egyptian police officers, soldiers and military officers in the Sinai Peninsula.
Sinai Province is helping operatives from Egypt’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organization in their attempt to overthrow the government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Sinai Province (Wilayat Sinai) terror group has also been aided by members of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza, which likewise has received assistance from the group in return in its efforts to carry out attacks against Israel.
