On Monday, Turkey’s former military chief was sentenced to life in prison and More than 60 people received sentences ranging from 1 to 47 years, for plotting to topple the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

At the end of a five-year trial, with close to 250 defendants facing treason charges, Istanbul’s 13th High Criminal Court handed life terms to retired Gen. Ilker Basbug, along with retired military officers, a left-wing politician and a journalist, the AP reports.

21 people were acquitted. The full tally of sentences is not yet available.

The defendants are expected to appeal the verdicts.
