The Afek Oil and Gas company may begin exploratory drilling in search of oil on the Southern Golan Heights on Sunday, environmental groups are claiming.

A green group claim that Afek received renewed permission for exploratory drilling, accompanied by a government committee who will oversee the test, according to a Nana10 report.

Environmental groups plan to protest tomorrow in response.

In September of 2014 environmental groups managed to legally shut down shale drilling in the Ela Valley near Beit Shemesh, as well as the exploratory drilling in the Golan.

In 2011, it was estimated that approximately 40 billion barrels of shale oil are sitting below the surface of the Ela Valley at a depth of approximately 200 to 400 meters.
