Former Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal passed away Tuesday from a heart attack. He was 67 years old.
The former mayor was admitted to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon a week and a half ago after saying that he felt unwell.
Moyal lost consciousness shortly after he arrived at Barzilai and remained in the hospital since. On Monday 24 February, the former mayor was transferred to Beilinson Medical Center in Petah Tikva, where he passed away Tuesday evening.
He is survived by his son. Moyal will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
The former mayor served the city from 1998 to 2008. Sderot’s present mayor, Alon Davidi, said his passing left “us and the residents of the entire city in shock. At this difficult time, I, the city council members, all the municipal employees and the residents of Sderot send condolences to the beloved Moyal family,” he added.
Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin called Moyal “a dear friend and a loyal envoy of the residents of Sderot.” The president recalled his “uncompromising commitment to the mission, the day-to-day work for the residents of the south and of Sderot out of true love.
“Eli built Sderot as a metropolis in Israel,” Rivlin said, “while not sparing effort and caring for the safety of the residents, as well as their ability to earn a living with dignity and well-being… The people of Israel will remember him as one of its special sons.”
