Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim meanwhile suspended the annual vacation leave for more than 3 million civil servants nationwide this week. A government order issued Monday told employees they must stay on the job until further notice. The Turkish Interior Minister fired nine thousand police officers, 30 governors, 52 civil service inspectors and 16 legal advisers as part of the general purge.

Nearly 8,000 people had been arrested since Friday, including more than 6,000 military personnel. More than 2,000 judges and prosecutors have been dismissed; many of those were arrested as well.
