German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle announced Thursday that his country is expelling four members of the Syrian Embassy.
“After the arrest of two persons suspected of spying for Syria, I have ordered the expulsion of four members of the Syrian Embassy in Berlin,” Westerwelle said in a statement.
The expulsion comes at an especially sensitive time for the Syrian regime, after the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council announced the expulsion of their Syrian ambassadors and the withdrawal of their envoys from Syria. Tunisia also announced earlier this week that it intends to expel its Syrian ambassador in response to the intensifying government brutality in Homs.
