The number of illegal African infiltrators in Israel went down by another 329 in April, but there still are thousands who will have to leave during the coming months unless their claims for asylum can be verified.
Israel completed a fence across the entire Egyptian-Israeli border last year to reduce to virtually zero the number of infiltrators, almost all of whom left their native countries to seek a better standard of living and not to flee as refugees. Many of them never made it to Israel b because they were shot and killed by Egyptian soldiers.
A significant number of illegal infiltrators left the urban centers of Israel, particularly metropolitan Tel Aviv, to stay in a detention center that was completed in the south in December.
Immigration authorities recently have arrested 70 African who have remained in the country with expired permits.
