Bokova did indeed respond – privately – condemning the contest and saying she had sent a letter to the Iranian envoy to UNESCO expressing her “deep concern.” But she has yet to issue any public statement and it has been two weeks since that letter was received.
At the same time, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to condemn Iran for hosting the conference. He said in a letter written to Ban, “Denying the Holocaust is one of the most powerful expressions of anti-Semitism, which legitimizes the deaths of millions of Jews. The United Nations must resolutely stand up against this hatred and harshly condemn this heinous act.”
Ban made his dutiful statement about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism on International Holocaust Day, but has yet to do anything about Iran or its contest.
What he has done has been to grant legitimacy to the bloodthirsty terrorists attacking Israelis from the safety of the Palestinian Authority, which is ruled by a man who also denies the Holocaust. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas wrote his PhD dissertation, in fact, on “evidence” for the denial of the Holocaust. Ban has spent this week defending and advocating against Israel in the face of Arab terror.
Recently international and U.S. sanctions on Iran were lifted in accordance with the terms of the July 2015 nuclear Iran Deal signed by six world powers in Vienna.
Billions of dollars are starting to flow back into Tehran as a result of the deal, and Iran and European nations are rapidly moving back to business as usual.
