All Israeli airlines have been ordered to halt flights to Paphos, in Cyprus, due to reported security threats.
Israeli intelligence cited “security reasons that cannot be made public” in Monday’s directive from the Shin Bet (ISA).
El Al, Arkia and IsraAir were all affected by the order, which guides the airlines to switch their departures and arrivals in Cyprus to Lanarca instead.
The Cypriot government assured the public that there is no reason for panic, emphasizing that the safety of the airports remains intact.
Paphos is the smallest of the island’s two airports and is located about 90 minutes away (by car) from Lanarca airport.
During the winter season, there are up to 10 flights a week from Tel Aviv and seven from Haifa arriving and departing from Paphos, compared to at least 60 flights a week to and from Lanarca.
“The situation will continue to be closely monitored and assessed in full cooperation with local authorities,” the Israeli Embassy in Nicosia told the Cyprus News Agency.
Cyprus is one of the most popular tourist destinations for traveling Israelis.
