Justice Salim Joubran was appointed Monday to become the vice president of the Supreme Court by the Judicial Appointments Committee, the first Arab to serve in the position.

Joubran, who has declined the raise in salary that comes with his new position, will remain at the post until he retires in August when he becomes 70 years old.

Born in Akko, Joubran is a Christian Arab and also was the first Arab to serve as chairman of the Central Elections Committee, a post he has held since 2013.

“Judge Joubran is a first-rate, trail-blazing judge,” said Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked in a statement following the appointment. “His appointment as vice president of the Supreme Court brings great honor to the State of Israel.”
