The Stanton Street Shul, possibly the most liberal-minded Orthodox shul in Manhattan’s historic Lower East Side, this Friday night, February 24, will hold its third annual cholent cook-off, which has become a celebration to all the senses, including the sixth.
Who will be crowned the new Stanton cholent champion? An email from the shul’s powers that be explains how it works: “Participants will cook in the shul (180 Stanton Street) on Thursday night. Then the entire community is invited to taste and vote on the cholent choices after Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv services on Friday night. The winner gets a trophy and bragging rights.”
