After months of increasingly common use of fireworks as weapons by terrorists, and in light of the vacuum that existed in the Israeli law in that regard, a new protocol was put into effect on Thursday which now allows security forces to open fire if such use of fireworks poses a threat to their lives.
Until this change in protocol, forces dealing with rioters and terrorist using such a weapon were unable to properly react, as rules of engagement were very restrictive.
Under the law, fireworks were not even defined as weapons, which prevented police from responding with the use of force.
Fireworks have been used to attack police or army forces as well as residential houses in numerous locations.
Update: According to a report in 0404 News, IDF soldiers are saying the reports are not only incorrect, but they are now receiving specific orders to not shoot at fireworks shooter, in response to the reports that the rules have been modified.
