Some reports claim that an Egyptian soldier mistook an Egyptian unit waiting in ambush for terrorists and opened fire on them.

It was initially thought to be a terrorist attack with reports saying there was an explosion.

ISIS is claiming it was a terror attack, that they are responsible, and they shot at a police checkpoint from an overlooking hilltop.
