Art Abramson says, “[Ben Cardin’s] family is the essence of what Jewish Baltimore was all about.” Cardin’s public school was 98% Jewish and the synagogue was right down the street. Cardin told JTA it was when he was 7 or 8 that he realized that “not everyone in the world was Jewish.” His wife Myrna recalls that when her husband went to Annapolis, “there really weren’t many Jews and he kind of made a vow to himself that he would be a proud Jew wherever he went. I do think that has kept in good stead, that he is not hiding from his religion.”
