While David Friedman’s confirmation as US Ambassador to Israel appears certain, several Democratic senators have declared their opposition to the move, reflecting the disdain of the Jewish left with the man who called the J Street crowd “worse than Kapos.” Friedman made the comparison at the time when J Street led the charge for President Obama in favor of the Iran nuclear deal, helping him make the case that “pro-Israel” US Jews favored the agreement.
Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Wednesday issued a statement saying he would oppose President Donald Trump’s nominee, because those pro-settlements and anti-liberal Friedman had made in the past would “compromise his effectiveness.”
It should be noted that Cardin was among the few Senate Democrats who opposed the Iran deal and stood up to Obama.
David Friedman has already apologized to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for his feisty statements, but Cardin, apparently, is not the forgive and forget type.
