An Israeli driver reached the outskirts of the Haredi city of Beitar Illit Monday morning with damage to his windshield, which was initially thought to have been the result of drive by shooting, but was more likely the result of a rock that was thrown by Arab terrorists at his car.
Beitar Illit was established in 1984 just east of the green line marking the liberated territories, as part of Gush Etzion, 6 miles south of Jerusalem, by Religious Zionist families. In the 1990s and later, an influx of Haredi families took over the community, while the original group moved on. The city is now home to many Hasidic groups, including Bobov, Boston, Boyan, Breslov, Karlin-Stolin and Slonim. Beitar Illit’s population is estimated at 50,000.
