Israeli palm trees in high winds as a storm hits Tel Aviv. (file)

Two young girls, ages 8 and 9, were injured Monday morning while waiting for a school bus north of Tel Aviv, when a palm tree collapsed on top of them, knocked over by extremely windy conditions.

One of the girls, age 8, suffering injuries throughout her body and was seriously injured. She was taken to nearby Laniado Medical Center in Netanya, where she’s listed in serious condition. The second girl, age 9, was injured in the arms and her leg. She was taken to Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba and is listed in good condition.

The incident occurred in Kibbutz Bahan, located near the coastal city of Netanya north of Tel Aviv, while the children were lining up for the bus at a stop.

Windy conditions have prevailed on the coastal plains for the last several days. Temperatures dropped over the weekend and on Monday were expected to drop further, with winds picking up further as winter begins to take its grip on the region.
