Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has announced that he is supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Likud primary leadership race this Thursday against his challenger, MK Gideon Sa’ar.

Speaking in a video statement, Erdan said, “As a member of the security cabinet, I am very familiar with the tremendous challenges we face … and therefore, after taking into account all the considerations, I’ve arrived at the conclusion Prime Minister Netanyahu is the person best suited to continue leading the Likud.”

Erdan does not oppose the fact that Sa’ar has presented a challenge, however.

The minister maintains that such a race “maintains the democracy” within the party, and “strengthens” the Likud.

“Our true competition is on March 2 against the Left, and we must come to it united for a Likud victory,” he said.
