Schoolchildren in flooded Gaza, Jan. 14, 2021.

This is what it looked like last Friday afternoon in Gaza. A column of elementary-school students huddled together on a narrow sidewalk, exiting the school onto the flooded street.

A Gazan citizen said angrily to the camera: “I don’t understand how the school principal sends the students outside in such weather when the street is flooded, first- and second-grade children.”

The children walked in the water, which in some places was knee-high. The school principal forbade bus drivers to enter the yard to pick up the students. Buses were forced to crowd the street, adding a traffic jam to the flood.

Meanwhile, anger is rising in Gaza against the Hamas government which has been unable to help them in their flooded homes.
