Five IDF soldiers fell in battle in northern Gaza early Monday and 10 others were wounded, including eight who were “severely injured,” the IDF said.
No details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet been released.
“This is a sad and painful day,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
“On behalf of the citizens of Israel, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the five heroes of the IDF who fell today in the Gaza Strip. They gave their lives for the security of our state, and the entire people of Israel embraces you, their families, in your pain. We also pray for the swift recovery of all those wounded.”
The fallen soldiers included:
– Captain Yair Yakov Shushan, aged 23, from Ma’alot-Tarshiha, a Squad Commander in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade;
– Staff Sergeant Yahav Hadar, aged 20, from Kfar Tavor, a soldier in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade;
– Staff Sergeant Guy Karmiel, aged 20, from Gedera, a soldier in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade;
– Staff Sergeant Yoav Feffer, aged 19, from Herzliya, a soldier in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade; and
– Staff Sergeant Aviel Wiseman, aged 20, from Poria Illit, a soldier in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade.
All the wounded were also fighters from the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade.
“The soldiers were evacuated to the hospital to receive medical treatment and their families have been notified,” the IDF said.
