Montreal Police (SPVM) have arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with a November 2023 shooting attack aimed at the Yeshiva Gedola of Montreal in the district of Côte-des-Neiges.
The unidentified suspect was expected to appear before a judge at the Montreal courthouse later in the day. The charges were not made public.
Police said a suspect was seen firing at the yeshiva before fleeing in a getaway car. Bullet holes were found in the door to the yeshiva, and shell casings were scattered on the ground.
Shortly after at 8:50 am that same morning, a 911 call was made about gunshot impacts found on the front door of a second Jewish school nearby on Chemin Deacon in Outremont.
“The Jewish community with close to 300 years of history in Quebec is under attack,” said Yair Szlak, President and Chief Executive Officer at Federation CJA at a news conference called within hours after the incidents.
Two Suspects
The unnamed detainee is the second suspect to be taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect on May 22, 2024.
“He appeared at the Montreal courthouse the same day to face charges of discharging a firearm, theft and receiving stolen vehicles. The investigation continued into the possible involvement of one or more other individuals in the event,” the SPVM said in a statement.
