The terrorist group Hamas is not only active in the Gaza Strip but also reportedly maintains weapons depots in Europe. Four men accused of managing these depots are currently on trial in Berlin.
The trial of the four suspected Hamas members has started in Berlin, with heightened security measures in place. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office charges the men with being part of a foreign terrorist organization. They are alleged to have been responsible for establishing or dismantling weapons caches in several European countries.
A total of 50 witnesses and several experts are expected to testify during the trial, which is anticipated to last until at least December.
In December 2023, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office arrested three of the men in Berlin and one in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The defendants, who have been in custody since then, are identified as two Lebanese nationals, one Egyptian, and one Dutch citizen.
The indictment claims the suspects held significant roles within Hamas, with direct connections to leaders of the group’s military wing. Investigators allege that Hamas had established underground weapons depots some time ago, intended for potential attacks on Israeli, Jewish, or other targeted facilities in Europe.
A court spokesperson confirmed that the trial would proceed under heightened security measures.
Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, including Germany, the United States, and the European Union.
The State Security Chamber of the Berlin Higher Regional Court has set trial hearing dates through December 17. According to the court spokesperson, presiding judge Doris Husch has scheduled the first witnesses for the second day of the trial, March 5. The prosecution has listed approximately 50 witnesses and several experts to testify.
