Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman is scheduled to meet in Moscow on Thursday with his Russian counterpart, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Liberman is set to leave Israel on Wednesday, along with the head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, IDF Maj. Gen. Tamir Heiman, the head of the Defense Ministry’s Political-Military Bureau, Zohar Palti, and other members of the security establishment.
The two sides will discuss security issues revolving around Iran and Syria, in addition to other issues.
Shoigu has been considered to be largely, although quietly responsible for the mounting military and subsequent foreign policy successes that Russia has seen in recent years and was the driving force behind the Russian policy in Syria.
He is also seen by some political analysts as a possible successor to Putin, once his term is completed.
