And then there were families that benefited from the generosity of local bakers and United Hatzalah volunteers. Beer said, “Both Angel and Berman bakeries didn’t want their excess stock of challot to go to waste, particularly when large parts of the city were without basic supplies and didn’t even have the power to bake challah. [After] one call to 1221, United Hatzalah’s emergency number, a truck was sent to United Hatzalah’s base on Sarei Yisrael Street. Over 2,000 challot were distributed to people who came to our base, and to the hundreds of other families that were reached by the squads of 4×4 vehicles manned by United Hatzalah volunteers.
